A study which helps in treating the heart disorder. It is a specialty in treating and caring everything related to the arteries and the heart. The doctor who is specialized in treating the heart problems is known as Cardiologist. However Cardiologist and cardiac surgeon is not the same. Cardiologist do angioplasty’s tests and procedures. On the other hand, Cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs the heart surgery.
Internal medicine is one of the parts of Cardiology. It includes diagnosis of a disease, treatment and causes. It also researches into heart injuries and diseases.

Heart specialist doctor / Cardiologist

A cardiologist or a cardiac is a doctor who is trained in finding, treating and preventing the disease caused to the heart and the blood vessels. He will review your medical history and will perform all the required physical examinations like checking your weight, heart, blood pressure, lungs, and blood vessels. After all the examinations and doctor’s findings by looking at the symptoms, problem will be diagnosed. After the problem is diagnosed some additional tests would be needed like X-Ray, Blood test, ECG etc. As each patient’s case is different, the problem may require more specialized testing. The cardiologist may recommend change in lifestyle or medicines. Below are the most popular terms associated by cardiology, read below to know more about them:

Angioplasty is a procedure where blood flow is restored through the arteries. If you have coronary artery disease and your arteries are blocked or narrowed by plague, which is a sticky material then angioplasty has to be done in this case. Doctors can also use Angioplasty for the below cases:
  • If a person has gone through a heart attack then a cardiologist can use Angioplasty to reduce the damage caused to the heart muscles.
  • It can also be used if the blood flow is less to the heart which is causing a chest pain.
Patients can go back to their homes within few days of angioplasty and can join their offices within a week of coming back to their home.

Procedure done in Angioplasty

A deflated balloon is attached to a special tubing and is threaded up to the coronary arteries. The balloon is then inflated by the cardiologist to widen the blocked areas so that the blood flows to the heart muscles. To decrease the chance of another blockage, a stent is combined with this tube which helps in opening the arteries. In Angioplasty the body is not cut open and the surgery lasts for 30 minutes to few hours. It requires an overnight stay in the hospital.

Heart Bypass Surgery

Damaged arteries in the heart muscles are replaed by Heart Bypass Surgery or Coronary Artery Bypass surgery. To repair the damaged arteries the sugeon uses the blood vessels which are taken from another part of your body. This surgery can only be done if the coronary arteries are damaged or blocked. Oxygenated blood is supplied to your heart by these arteries. If the blood flow is restricted to the heart or the arteries are blocked then the heart can not work properly which can lead to the heart attak or heart failure. Depending on the number of arteries are blocked or damaged, the doctor or a Cardiologist will recommend a type of surgery. The types of bypass surgery are:
  • If only one artery is blocked then single bypass
  • If two arteries are blocked then double bypass
  • If three arteries are blocked then triple bypass
  • If four arteries are blocked then quadruple bypass
If the number of arteries blocked are more, then the risk or the chances of a heart failure, heart attack, or another cardiac issue is also more. If the blockages are higher in the arteries then the surgery can take longer time and can become more complex.

Cardiovascular Surgeon

Cardiovascular surgeons are the ones who operate on your blood vessels and the heart to repair the damage caused due to any disease or disorders of the cardiovascular system. A primary care doctors begins the diagnosis of your heart and he can refer you to a cardiologist if he finds any major problem. If a cardiologist found that you need to be operated or your heart needs a surgery then he will refer you to a cardiovascular surgeon. However a cardiologist will remain a part of your heart health team and will take care even after the heart surgery. There are many different types of surgery or operations that are performed by cardiovascular surgeons like coronary artery bypass, heart valve repair and replacement, heart transplantation, heart defect repair, aneurysm repair and trans myocardial laser revascularization. Blood vessels like the aorta (the body’s main blood supplier) is also been operated by a Cardiovascular surgeon.

Cardiovascular surgery

Cardiovascular (heart) surgery or cardiothoracic surgery is a surgery done on great vessels or the heart by the cardiac / cardiothoracic or Heart surgeons. It is done for the treatment of congenital heart disease, ischemic heart disease (for example- coronary artery bypass grafting), vascular heart disease which is caused from atherosclerosis, endocarditis and rheumatic heart disease. It also includes heart transplantation. There are certain procedures that are used to help in surviving in the heart attack and diagnose your condition. For example : Thrombolysis which many heart attack patients have undergone. It is a procedure that involves a clot-dissolving agent to be injected in coronary artery to restore the blood flow. This procedure has to be done within few (usually three) hours of a heart attack. Coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) has to be done to improve blood supply to the heart muscle, in case this treatment is not done immediately after the heart attack.

Cardiac catheterization

Cardiovascular conditions are diagnosed and treated under a procedure named Cardiac catheterization. It is a procedure to examine if your heart is working well or not. During cardiac catheterization, a catheter, which is a long thin tube is inserted in a vein or an artery in your arm, neck or groin and is threaded through the blood vessels to the heart. A Cardiac catheterization provides all the information related to your heart like how well is your heart. He diagnose the problem and then a procedure to open blocked arteries are allowed. During cardiac catheterization your doctor may do the following:
  • The doctor may go for coronary angiography or coronary arteriography in which they take an X-rays using contrast dye injected through the catheter to check narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.
  • He can perform coronary angioplasty with stent to open the narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.
  • He will check the pressure in all the four chambers of the heart.
  • Open Heart Surgery
  • A heart-lung bypass machine is connected to the patient, once the heart is visible to the surgeon. This machine will help the surgeon to operate as it will move the blood away for the heart.
  • Then the original cut will be stitched.

Vascular surgery

Vascular surgery is specialized in managing the diseases of the vascular system or arteries and veins by and surgical reconstruction, medical therapy and minimally-invasive catheter procedures. Vascular and endovascular surgeons helps in restoring the maximum health and well-being by treating blood vessel and lymphatic system conditions. People with artery diseases are at the higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack. There lifestyle has to be changed into healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and quitting smoking. The most beneficial thing is to maintain a healthy weight.
